The Goal...

of this scene is for people to feel a sense of whimsy and nostalgia. Of course that depends on your background. It’s supposed to look fun and almost like a scene from an old Christmas movie. The main inspiration for this was theChristmas movies I watched as a kid. A lot of the style of the environment was inspired by the stop motion Rudolph movie and Elf. I wanted it to look like a miniature used in an old movie. The goal was for it to feel like a space that was from the past and doesn’t exist in the real world.

Design Choices

To achieve this the space is filled with very simple and classic toys and tools. All the toys I designed are very stereotypical Christmas toys. I chose to design the room in a way that wasn’t too modern, with an arched ceiling, rounded windows, and pastel colours. The colours are all a little muted but the space is still filled with colour. I didn’t want it to seem too old, like a wood cabin, I still wanted it to look bright and new. I also chose not to add texture to most objects unless they were metallic. I didn’t want the space to have too much detail in order to give it the look of a miniature model.

Another element of design in this piece is the wrapping paper used on the presents. I designed a series of simple yet classic patterns matching the feel of this work and the overall colour palette. These can be seen just to the right.
