Rob's Workshop

Whimsy and maybe a sense of nostalgia are what I hope you feel when you look at this space. This work had a simple goal: to create a 3D environment with a focal point. I’ve always loved the vintage Christmas aesthetic, with bright colours, nutcrackers, and shiny gold ornaments that my mom would call gaudy. I think it matches my style, so I chose to create a Christmas workshop with a charming tin robot.

The old Christmas movies I watched as a kid were my main inspiration for this scene. A lot of the environment design was inspired by old stop-motion Christmas movies like Rudolph. I wanted it to look like a miniature, a whimsical space that doesn’t exist in the real world.

Design Choices

To achieve my goal, I filled the space with simple and classic toys and tools. All the toys I designed are very stereotypical Christmas toys, and I used a pastel colour palette mixed with a few very bright colours and metallics. I also designed a series of simple wrapping paper patterns inspired by vintage patterns I found online. These choices led to a space that feels like stepping into my charming, wacky, and nostalgic vision of Christmas.
